Taking the first steps to go abroad alone and where I started.
There’s always the question of when, why or how?

The decision to go travelling solo is not always black and white, there are so many what ifs. What if I run out of money? What if I run into trouble? What if I get stuck and don’t understand the language? What if it isn’t safe?
These are simply some of the questions that came to mind before I departed from the comfort of my hometown. Now don’t get me wrong; I had travelled before, but that was with friends, family, or someone I could depend on for support, help, or company. At any age, leaving home and stepping out of your comfort zone is always scary (as we all know). But I guess that’s the fun in life? Pushing boundaries and testing your confidence, character building right…
I decided to start my 2024 adventures solo because I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to prove to myself and my loved ones that travelling solo isn’t as scary as it seems. Comparing my solo journeys to trips with others has its ups and downs (more on that in another post)! Now, of course there is always an element of danger and precaution. This is something you should always take into consideration. If you do your research, stay alert, and trust your instincts, you’ll be just fine.
Where to go solo?
My first big solo trip was to Hong Kong (which I will talk about more in upcoming blogs). Not exactly where you would expect someone to take their first solo trip right – not to mention its the complete opposite side for the world…
But that’s where I set my compass to, Asia.

Hong Kong snapshots.
It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen or experienced.
As a child and through my teenage years, I was fortunate to explore many parts of Europe and even a bit of North America. So I thought, why not Asia? Travelling solo to such a bustling and vast place was daunting at first, but no matter where you are, finding some familiarity is always a big advantage. Growing up right next to a city, I found comfort and familiarity in knowing that I would adjust quickly in HK. (So to get to the point), what I would suggest to other aspiring and fellow travellers is, If you’re unsure where to start, consider a place that feels familiar or resonates with you. How it flows, what the weather is like and of course Research. Even if you travel to a neighbouring city or village and stay there alone for a couple nights, it counts!
If you’re thinking about traveling solo, I can promise it’s one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. It’s an opportunity to learn about yourself, immerse in different cultures, connect with new people, and most importantly, do what you love! Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, there are benefits for everyone. You won’t be tied to a specific path or feel obligated to accommodate others. I met so many incredible friends as a solo traveller!
Even though I’ve travelled on and off this year, (both solo and with friends) the experiences I’ve had and the memories I’ve created continue to amaze me. I’m eager to keep this journey going and excited to share it with all of you.
Thank you for reading my post—I hope you enjoyed.
Until my next post of intrepid tales on my trails…!
