Adventures in Koh Samui!

So, where did we leave off? Ah yes — Khao Sok!

Our next stop? The grand old island of Koh Samui.

Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand (just an hour’s flight from Bangkok, or about a 10-hour overnight train journey, if you know you know…), Koh Samui offers a little bit of everything. From lively nightlife and sun-soaked beaches to serene temples, waterfalls, and island-hopping adventures — it’s a mix that caters to just about any kind of traveller.

Our first night? Let’s just say it was eventful. I won’t go into too many details, but if you’ve ever had a night out abroad, you can probably picture how it went…

Pig Island: Instagram vs. Reality

After recovering from night one, we split off into smaller groups — some of us heading out on an island-hopping trip to the famous (or should I say infamous?) Koh Madum or  Pig Island.

Now, on social media, it looks like paradise — a dreamy little spot with cute pigs trotting along pristine white beaches. In reality? A bit more of a chaotic farmyard situation — think dogs fighting, and pig mess everywhere!

I’ll admit, I fell for the Instagram illusion. We found a local agency offering a small tour package that included:

  • A boat ride to and from the island
  • Entry and time to roam around
  • A quick stop for snorkeling

I can’t recall the exact price, but it was around £20. Unfortunately, the snorkelling wasn’t great — rough seas, low visibility, and coral that had clearly seen better days (thanks, climate change). Overall, I’d say Pig Island is one to skip.

Temples, Culture & Koh Samui’s Charm

Next up on our itinerary was Wat Phra Yai, which translates to “Big Buddha Temple.” Built in 1972, it’s the most iconic landmark on Koh Samui. The temple sits on Koh Phan, and offers lovely views of the island. You’ll also find plenty of small shops selling trinkets, food, and souvenirs.

It’s a peaceful spot — perfect for a daytime visit when you want something a little more cultural and relaxing amidst the chaos of nightlife and adventure.

A Knockout Night Out – Muay Thai Fights

That evening, we decided to experience something uniquely Thai — a Muay Thai fight. And wow, what an experience! The skill, precision, and sheer focus it takes to land a hit while staying light on your feet is incredible.

There were four rounds featuring fighters from all over the world, each showcasing amazing agility and technique. Add in cheap drinks and a buzzing crowd, and you’ve got yourself a night to remember. I don’t recall the exact venue, but you’ll easily find Muay Thai events around the island — definitely go if you get the chance!

Becoming Fighters Ourselves

Ironically, the very next morning, we had our own Muay Thai lesson.

It was active, fun, and surprisingly empowering. Over a couple of hours, we learned the basics — punches, kicks, and stances — all while working up a serious sweat. The session ended with a chance to watch skilled fighters train, which was a highlight of my entire trip. (You can catch a clip of it on my TikTok!)

Ziplining Through the Jungle

After our fighting debut, a few of us decided to try the Tree Bridge Zipline.

For around £40-50, this tour features 33 platforms, 21 ziplines, sky bridges, abseils, and more. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, it’s a must-do! You’ll soar above the jungle and ocean, feeling like Tarzan swinging through the trees. The guides were fantastic, making sure we were safe and even recording a few clips of us mid-flight. We booked through a local vendor — super easy to arrange

Markets, Crocodile, and Final Thoughts

To wrap up our final night on Koh Samui, we wandered through one of the island’s bustling markets. Music, street food, souvenirs — the atmosphere was electric. And yes… I even tried crocodile! (Spoiler: it really does taste like chicken.)

Originally, our tour was meant to stay in Koh Phangan, but due to scheduling changes, we ended up on Koh Samuiinstead — and honestly, I’m glad we did. The mix of activities, nightlife, and relaxation made it a perfect stop.

The only downside? It’s definitely tourist-heavy. Expect crowds and busy beaches — it’s not exactly the place for introverts or those seeking solitude. But if you’re after fun, adventure, and a taste of everything Thailand has to offer, Koh Samui delivers in spades
